Pass the ADI Part 1: Your Journey to Becoming a Driving Instructor Starts Here
Becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) is a respected and rewarding profession — but it all begins with the ADI Part 1 Theory Test. This is your gateway into a stable career where you make a genuine difference every day.

Whether you’re retraining, looking for job security, or ready for a change, this page explains everything you need to know about Part 1 — and how we can help you pass it with confidence.

About the ADI Theory Test
The test is made up of two parts:
- A Multiple Choice section
- A Hazard Perception test
You must pass both parts at the same sitting to move forward to Part 2.
Multiple Choice Questions
The multiple-choice test is a computer-based exam featuring 100 questions drawn from four main areas:
- There are 25 questions in each of these 4 categories:
- road procedure
- traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge
- driving test, disabilities, and the law
- publications and instructional techniques
You’ll need a thorough understanding of the Highway Code, essential driving techniques, and how to communicate and instruct learners effectively.
ADI Theory Test Topic Lists
To help you prepare, here’s a breakdown of the topic areas you’ll be tested on:
- Road procedure
- Traffic signs and signals
- Pedestrian and vehicle control
- Driving test, disabilities, and the law
- Publications and instructional techniques

These are drawn from DVSA-approved sources such as:

We help you study the right material, the right way.
ADI Hazard Perception Test
The second part of the test is the Hazard Perception section. This ensures you’re not just knowledgeable on paper — but also alert and responsive behind the wheel.
You’ll watch 14 video clips featuring everyday road scenes. In each clip, you must identify developing hazards as early as possible by clicking your mouse.
The Hazard Perception Test Explained
Each clip contains at least one developing hazard — one clip will contain two. The sooner you spot the hazard, the higher you’ll score (up to 5 points per hazard). Timing is everything.
You’ll need to score at least 57 out of 75 to pass this section.
Why Is the Hazard Perception Test Included in the ADI Theory Test?
As a future driving instructor, you’ll need to model the highest standards of road awareness. Spotting hazards early can prevent accidents — and more importantly, it’s what you’ll be teaching your pupils every day.
The hazard perception test ensures you’re prepared to do just that.
